Slab Leaks

Slab leaks may be defined as a water pipe leak that can occur in or under the foundation of your home.  These leaks can be caused by many different reasons, and may not always be catastrophic, especially if discovered and repaired quickly.

What are common signs of a slab leak?

  • Puddles of water on the floor, coming from under the surface of the floor.  This usually happens close to plumbing areas inside the house which may include your kitchen, bathroom, and laundry rooms.  If you’ve ruled out every other reason you can think of for causing this mess….call a plumber NOW!

  • Sounds of water running in your walls or beneath the surface of your floors.  If you turn off all plumbing fixtures and it still sounds like there is water running…call a plumber NOW!  Also, if you see that your water meter is spinning, even though you have no water currently running in your a plumber NOW!

  • Hot spots on certain parts of your floor, and cold spots on other parts.  This may be due to a hot water slab leak, in which case the leaking hot water may be heating up the concrete under which you are walking.

  • Water pressure is lowered.  If you notice an ‘all of a sudden’ severe drop in water a plumber NOW!

  • High water bills, especially if there is a sudden hike from your average water bill usage.

  • Mildew or moisture under carpets or flooring, or the ongoing smell of it.

  • Cracks in your flooring.

While slab leaks are definitely not an issue to be overlooked due to the significant amounts of damage it may cause, early detection and repair can definitely help.  Not only will you be able to reduce the amount of structural damage or personal item loss, but you may also be able to keep the overall repair bill low and affordable.  However, things happen.  And if you do have a horrible experience with a slab leak, it may be a good idea to discuss with your homeowners insurance company about what may be covered.
